EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

ROLLA AND MARSHFIELD MO on Oct 26, 2021 at 1:13:24 pm [remove] - [edit] [Print] BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE MAY 30 UPDATES FOR ROLLA, AND JUNE 23 FOR MARSHFIELD. SOME CONFUSING CHANGES IN the route.

UPDATE: as of 12-6, GOOGLE still does not accurately depict the new road configurations east of Marshfield.

GASCONADE BRIDGE REMINDER on Nov 19, 2021 at 6:07:23 pm [remove] - [edit] [Print]
MO page-17: You can now drive old 66 between exit 145 and exit 140 east of Lebanon. A new outer road
bridge has been opened, bypassing the closed and endangered 1923 Gasconade river bridge. You do NOT
have to "JOIN I-40 WEST or EAST anymore. There is a side road that will let you get closer to the old
bridge.

Niangua creek Detour on Aug 11, 2022 at 12:24:13 am [Print]
The recent detour between Conway and Marshfield MO is now over. Hwy CC is OPEN where MODOT removed a beautiful 1923 bridge and replaced it with an ugly slab.

Check the other updates for the NEW directions between this bridge and Marshfield, as the new section of CC does not go to Marshfield anymore, and as of April there was STILL NO H-66 sign at the hard to spot new intersection of Old 66/Hubbel Rd.

CLAREMORE MOTOR INN on Jul 31, 2022 at 7:11:02 pm [Print]
Just got another bad report about the Claremore Motor inn in Claremore OK. Dirty.I had already stopped recommending it.

WIGWAM IN HOLBROOK on May 06, 2022 at 3:06:52 pm [Print]
Yesterday a tourist posted an aggressively harsh, confrontational and "knock this chip off my shoulder" review online about The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, which resulted in a flurry of comments, both agreeing and disagreeing. Put me strongly in the disagree camp. I have stayed there many times (as recently as 2019) and had no problems.

I am happy to say that there were more comments supporting the Wigwams than otherwise.

Of course, I don't care if there is no stopper in the sink (LOL), or that the original bathtroom tile is cracked, or that there is no coffee pot in the room!

I don't stay at historic motels on 66 for that.

And some comments spread baseless rumors and innuendo. The OP said he was treated "rudely". I REALLY doubt the clerk "literally threw the keys" at the complainer. Overhand? Underhand? Did they poke his eye out? LOL

Folks, remember that 66 is NOT Disneyland, where all the staff is paid to smile at all times. These are real people leading real lives along the road in difficult times and trying to meet the needs of (sometimes) difficult people.

Yes, rudeness is bad, but often it is the PERCEPTION of rudeness on the part of the visitor...or in response to what the visitor is putting out.

I have never been treated rudely there (even when they don't recognize me).

If you think you will not enjoy staying at an older property, with fewer modern amenities, cracked tile (but clean...Wigwams have always been clean on MY visits) tiny rooms (motels and hotels built before the mid fifties usually have small rooms...that's part of the charm)...IF you think you might treat such a property with disrespect and harsh reviews, then do yourself and Route 66 a favor and stay at one of the many CHAIN motels. I am sure they never have any issues...right? (sarcasm).

OF course, if you DO have a legitimate gripe, please let the property know of your complaint first. And I always am interested in reviews of motels on 66...good and bad. I am having to reduce my recommendation for a couple of motels to "check the room" status due to some recent reports, but am not yet removing them because I hope they can overcome the lack of business due to covid and improve.

I HAVE removed some places over the years (or never included them), due to unclean, unsafe or rude conditions.

Rant over. Be kind to Route 66!

66 BIRTHDAY on May 01, 2022 at 4:02:31 pm [Print]
Despite what you may have read online yesterday, the long-accepted birthday of US 66 is November 11, 1926, when it was certified as an official US Hwy.

yesterday marks the anniversary of when Cyrus Avery and others agreed that it would be 66, not 60 or 62.

So yesterday could be celebrated as the day the route was conceived...or the "gender reveal" day!

But NOT the birthday.

The Darryl Starbird Custom car museum (SIDE TRIP south of Afton) is CLOSED. They moved it all to Nebraska.

bogus signs on Apr 28, 2022 at 6:37:50 pm [Print]
On my recent trip to Chicago and back I noticed many issues with Historic 66 or 66 Byway signs that were misleading, wrong, or had bogus dates. if a brown or blue 66 sign tells you to go a different way from the directions you are following in your EZ 66 Guide, IGNORE THE SIGN!

CHANDLER OK on Apr 22, 2022 at 4:23:05 pm [Print]
If I happen to be away when you come thru Chandler seeking an autograph for your EZ Guide, please go to a new shop...Nostalgic Chandler...at the corner of 12th and Manvel on 66 south side of downtown. Look for the flamingo on the sign. Mariko should have stickers that i autographed which she can put in your book!

Usually open 10-5 except tuesdays and sometimes other days. Nice little gift shop and lots of 66 info.

The giant miner that was added to the photo op on the north east side of town (near the viaduct) has burned in an unfortunate accident. But there are plans to rebuild him.
