This site has the latest info on the recently washed out bridges. You can still get to Amboy from Essex by using I-40 west to Kelbaker Rd, then south to rejoin 66 to Amboy.
And please also check EZ 66 Guide on facebook for updates for all of 66 as they happen.

The "ghost sign" on the State Line Mercantile is actually on the "eastbound" side (or west side to be exact).

Road warrior from the UK Alan Pratt just posted the following welcome news to mcjerry66.com:
Just to let you know that the Ludlow to Fort Cady road has been resurfaced. It is now 27 miles of the smoothest tarmac ever! Not sure when it was done, but the signs are still there saying ROugh Road for 10 Miles and the centre line has not been painted yet.
After recent bad news, this is certainly a relief! Next edition i can return this 27 miles of formerly almost unbearable 66 back to the main EZ 66 tour!
Thanks Alan! Update...I got a conflicting report that the section west from Ludlow to the overpass is still rough to some degree...
update 10-18...just drove this last month. the ludlow to overpass section IS a bit bumpy...but not too bad. the rest is great!

The former Eisler Bros store is now named "Nelson's Old Riverton Store". I misspelled Nelson!

I'm sad to say I've gotten a couple of complaints about the 66 Motel in Barstow. Please give them a try but I'd advise checking the room first.

Bad news! Access to the infamous La Bajada Hill, on pre 1932 66 between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM has been blocked off from below by the authority of the Pueblo de Cohchiti. My friend Andy sent me a photo of the locked gate where once you could turn off the road to Tetilla peak Rec Area, about a mile from NM 16. Once off the paved road, you could formerly join the old dirt 66 and cross the 1928 bridge to reach the foot of the road that winds roughly up the mesa. A sign says "No Trespassing-$500 Fine" so I guess they mean business. It is unknown if the top half of the mesa, which is government land, is still reachable from Santa Fe. UPDATE 9-2019...YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS FROM SANTA FE ANYMORE. It is very iffy. One reader encountered a locked gate...others didn't. In any event, I am not advising this route in the EZ Guide.

Sadly, the 1917 culvert was removed when the asphalt pavement on a stretch of this OPTION was dug up. That section is now gravel. The 1909 Culvert is still there on the east-west stretch that remains paved. Although this culvert long ago lost its pipe guard rails and is beat up, the legend "BUILT 1909" is still readable, stamped into the south concrete side rail. There are a couple other concrete culverts on this option, but no dates are visible. BTW...the Ozark trails obelisk still stands, and is constantly repainted white to hide grafitti.

Tim also related his experience with some sections of Dirt 66 in NM and AZ becoming somewhat rough after heavy rains. This is to be expected, but usually the roads are smoothed out again.

WestBound (WB) into Rolla from HWY V: a new connection to County Rd 2000 was scheduled to have been built before now. This will connect the through EZ TOUR route to the section of CO RD 2000 labeled "Dead end 66" on the map.
BTW...ignore the "OPTIONAL" label on that map. It was an option but I changed it back to the main route...but forgot to remove the caption! LOL
Anyway, you'll be able to follow this new connection along the updated 66, or hopefully stay on the original 66 (CO 2020) as in the tour directions. Goes for EASTBOUND too. The new route connects to the old at both ends so no worries.
