EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

traveling alone? on Apr 23, 2019 at 4:30:35 pm [Print]
Recently there have been posts on facebook where women have asked if it is safe for them to drive Route 66 alone.

On one. the OP was getting stressed after over a hundred comments, some of which over-exaggerated safety concerns. She basically stated she had been excited about the trip but was now having doubts.

Despite uninformed or fearful comments, you do NOT need to carry a gun! You shouldn't worry too much about "dopers" or drunk drivers. Just use common sense, especially in big cities, as you would in ALL cities in ANY country. There is nothing inherently dangerous for women OR men about driving 66 if you practice that aforementioned "common sense". In the EZ Guide I do point out a very few possible troublesome areas, plus tips on desert and mountain driving, etc.

Japanese 66 expert Mariko Kusakabe had driven 66 by herself many times, and still does long trips by herself! Recently I had three women visit McJerry's Route 66 Gallery in one day who each were driving alone.

We are fighting to preserve Route 66 and keep it alive. These kind of unrealistic fear-mongering comments do not help.

AFTON STATION AFTON OK on Dec 20, 2018 at 4:33:47 pm [Print]
Sad news about the former Afton Station in Afton, OK. The Packard museum seems to be extinct, as most of the Packards have been sold and removed. The future of the station is unknown. It is closed for the winter, and the family is not sure whether it will reopen (without the Packards) or be sold.

UPDATE: All contents were sold. It no longer exists. Its now plastered with "NO TRESPASSING" signs and is no longer even a worthy photo op. There IS a new roadside attraction down the street to the west.

print updates? on Nov 20, 2018 at 4:52:40 pm [Print]
There are currently about 70 pages of updates, going back a few editions. I DON"T advise printing them all!

You can scroll down to the beginning of the updates which pertain to the edition you have. The 4th edition updates begin NOV 4 2015.

I suggest you read thru and mark in your book which updates apply to you.

I hope to improve this website in the future, with better functionality!

The section of 9 foot "sidewalk hwy" between Miami to Narcissa is currently in better condition. More of the old road is visible now that much of the gravel has been removed. Some parts still may be rough.
