EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

Gravel option #1, from Bellemont to Parks, has suffered some from recent rains. On the eastern portion (a short section past private land) the road is very "rubboard" and rough. Go slow, and choose the smoothest track. the remainder is mostly OK. This should be smoothed eventually.

I recently saw a truck delivering furniture to the Lincoln Motel here in Chandler, so this evening I stopped by to see. Jay gave me a tour of several rooms, and they are continuing to improve this cool old (1939) motel, with new beds and mattresses and other items thus far. Its a clean, quiet and safe motel in a nice setting with a great neon sign (partly broken at the moment)at reasonable rates. I've had many visitors to the gallery this year who stayed there with no problems. So help support a classic Route 66 business..and if you stay there you can buy me breakfast the next day!

Update: Yay! They fixed the broken neon (again). reward their efforts!

Topock to Needles CA on Jul 08, 2014 at 3:15:04 pm [Print]
During the summer "monsoon" rains in AZ, sometimes Old 66 can be temporarily flooded and closed in the area between Oatman and Topock. IF this happens on your trip (you will see signs)then, coming from Oatman, you'll need to take CO Rd 1 from Golden Shores to Needles (see the maps on AZ page-21 and CA page 2)Or take Boundary Cone Rd. Eastbound you'll need to cross the river at Needles (see map on CA page 4) and make your way to Golden Shores or use Boundary Cone Rd to Oatman.

Or, you can take I-40 (post 1952 66) between Kingman and Topock.

That is, IF the road just happens to be closed. Otherwise just follow the EZ directions between Oatman and Topock.

ST LOUIS yet again! on Jun 29, 2014 at 8:33:22 pm [Print]
Argh! In looking over the changes in the Arch area, I noticed that I made a typo on the exit number for the McKinley bridge on the overview map on MO page 2! (darn this two fingered typing!)

It should be EXIT 248A (not 284A)

My Bad...at least it is shown correctly on the actual directions and detail map on MO page 3 and 4!

Quick reminders:

WB means "westbound-towards California" EB is eastbound.

"frontage road" is a section of roadway directly alongside an interstate hwy

Missouri uses strange combinations of letters (such as AB, VV, etc) to designate some secondary roads.

Please read the notes in the front of the EZ Guide for more.

The Red Top Diner bldg has been moved to within the confines of the Wildlife West nature Park west of Edgewood. No longer visible from 66.

Regards the Blackbird Airpark SIDE TRIP in Palmdale...instead of "YF-12A" substitute "A-12".

I just got my wires crossed when I typed this entry! The only remaining YF-12A interceptor prototype is in Dayton, Ohio, while a choice example of the CIA single seat A-12 version is in Palmdale!

If you're not into fast jets it doesn't matter...but just wanted to set things straight. BTW their hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

frontage road on Mar 29, 2014 at 2:34:19 am [Print]
I had a foreign reader ask me what the heck are these "frontage roads" I keep mentioning in the directions? This is a good question. These are sections of roads that (usually) closely parallel the interstate highways, offering access to property and businesses. They are also called "service roads" and (in Missouri) "Outer Roads". Usually they are old 66 right of ways, other times they are short sections of modern roads connecting sections of old 66.

You don't have to worry that the word "frontage road" is not spelled out on the maps...the tour directions will automatically take you onto and off of "frontage roads" as needed.

I gave a link to a website (created by Phil Gordon) that hosted my gallery of Whiting Bros gas station photos. Well, that link is dead. The website is now http://rt66.webege.com/wbros/mcjerry.html
