Unfortunately, I just learned that Mr A. J Clements who had the hobby gas station west of Yukon is selling off his collection of old gas station memorabilia...so that stop is no more.

Regards the Blackbird Airpark SIDE TRIP in Palmdale...instead of "YF-12A" substitute "A-12".
I just got my wires crossed when I typed this entry! The only remaining YF-12A interceptor prototype is in Dayton, Ohio, while a choice example of the CIA single seat A-12 version is in Palmdale!
If you're not into fast jets it doesn't matter...but just wanted to set things straight. BTW their hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I had a foreign reader ask me what the heck are these "frontage roads" I keep mentioning in the directions? This is a good question. These are sections of roads that (usually) closely parallel the interstate highways, offering access to property and businesses. They are also called "service roads" and (in Missouri) "Outer Roads". Usually they are old 66 right of ways, other times they are short sections of modern roads connecting sections of old 66.
You don't have to worry that the word "frontage road" is not spelled out on the maps...the tour directions will automatically take you onto and off of "frontage roads" as needed.

I gave a link to a website (created by Phil Gordon) that hosted my gallery of Whiting Bros gas station photos. Well, that link is dead. The website is now http://rt66.webege.com/wbros/mcjerry.html
Missouri's secret code! on

I've gotten a couple of emails about all those funny sets of letters ("FF" "AT" "Z" etc) on the Missouri maps and directions.
Its not a secret code...this is how Missouri designates certain supplementary or secondary roads in their state! So the "ZZ" on a map is "Highway ZZ".
So where you see a letter in a circle on a map, or "Hwy F" (for example) in the directions, just look for those letters on a sign.
