EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

What...No Stuckeys?!!! on Nov 29, 2013 at 6:34:44 pm [Print]
I am sad to report that the Stuckey's along I-40 at Gruhlkey Rd in Texas, Palomas Exit west of Tucumcari, and Las Colonias Exit west of Santa Rosa are CLOSED and boarded up (as of November 2013!

Is a long time tourist tradition along 66 gone for good? As a kid I passed the trip away watching for their billboards, and we sometimes actually managed to get Dad to STOP at one!

Ashfork has a Tourist Info center and Museum in the former AZ Highway Dept facility on the west side at 901 W Old Rte 66 (AKA Pine St...the older alignment shown on the detail map).

Currently the target of preservation efforts by Route 66 IECA (Inland Empire California)is the Cucamonga Service Station, which opened in the 1910s and closed in the 1970s. Located just west of the NW corner of Archibald and Foothill in Rancho Cucamonga, this valued relic is currently fenced off and a bit hard to photograph, but the preservation effort is to be applauded!

ALSO...Since the towns along Foothill blend together, and the EZ attraction text is not presented in a totally West to East fashion on this page (in the pre 4/14 printings...it IS now!),here's the order (westbound) of the icons mentioned in the text of the EZ Guide (and a couple of new entries):
Former Virginia Dare Winery(at Haven)
-Cucamonga Station(at Archibald)
-Thomas Vineyard (at Vineyard)
-new Pacific Electric Trail Underpass (with Car sculptures WB and the 66 states EB)and the Route 66 Trail head (with a short section of 1914 pavement)
-Sycamore Inn(at San Bernardino Rd)
-Magic lamp Inn(just east of Grove Ave)

Clarification: In the directions for the various suffixes of Colorado Bvld/Street/Place, you can ignore Colorado PLACE. WB you will curve from Colorado Blvd onto Colorado Street, which becomes Colorado BLVD again in Pasadena. Its no big deal...just follow the wide avenue named "Colorado whatever".

Chicken Boy! CA page-23-24 on Nov 29, 2013 at 5:33:37 pm [Print]
GIANT ALERT! Look for the iconic "Chicken Boy" at 5558 N Figueroa Street (an older 66 routing) in the Highland Park neighborhood of LA. This is along one of the OPTIONS ("Alt 66 Figeuroa") shown on the map on Ca page-24.

Formerly on Broadway in LA, Chicken Boy (a combo of a classic "Muffler Man body and a chicken head)now roosts atop Future Studio.

OK...let me clarify the directions for the GIANT ALERT "Fork in the Road" in Pasadena. Ignore the bit about "go 2 blocks". Once you turn from Arroyo Parkway onto Glenarm, go 0.4 mile (past the lights at Raymond and Fair Oaks), then turn right onto Pasadena Ave.

On my way to CA I stopped at the new business now open in tiny Texola, OK.

Tumbleweeds Grill
and
Country Store

Located in the "Water Hole # 2" building (with the western murals).

This once forlorn place is now a very nice cafe (great burger!) which currently houses the owner's artwork too. I am heartened to see someone investing in Texola. The owner has also acquired the former bar next door, and has plans to expand.

from their website:

Tumbleweeds is open seven days a week serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. In addition to our traditional home-cooked offerings, we have daily specials and home- made desserts.

Tumbleweeds also has the only general store within ten miles of Texola. So stop by to eat and to pick up refreshments or anything else you need while traveling Route 66.

MO page 3 Across the McKinley bridge on Sep 17, 2013 at 4:58:55 pm [Print]
To clarify the WB directions a bit (since I have more room here)for transitioning from the McKinley Bridge onto I-70: Just after you cross the McKinley Bridge, you will then cross I-70...be prepared to turn left IMMEDIATELY onto 11th St at the stoplight, following the signs "To east I-70" and then join the freeway.
