Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

Ron Warnick's blog just confirmed a recent report I'd had concerning the possibility of staying overnite in some restored motel cabins at Red Oak 2 (the gathering of relocated and restored historic bldgs just east of Carthage).

Call 417-237-0808 for more information.

Category: I goofed!

In the WB and EB directions (on the west side of Carthage), please note that you actually cross OVER US 71, not under!

Thanks to some nice visitors who pointed this out.

Had 2 reports that the GIANT PISTOL at 810 Kearney is gone! I hope one of the many giants along 66 hasn't stole it for evil purposes (naw...they're all friendly giants).

OH no! I just heard that the "old gas station with a blue tiled roof" in Bristow is reportedly sporting a WHITE tiled roof now!

Hmmm...that's actually not a big deal...just another little change along the road.:-)

Missing GIANT ALERT: the Sappington Farmers Market is closed and the Giant Farmer and Son are gone.

I recently saw a truck delivering furniture to the Lincoln Motel here in Chandler, so this evening I stopped by to see. Jay gave me a tour of several rooms, and they are continuing to improve this cool old (1939) motel, with new beds and mattresses and other items thus far. Its a clean, quiet and safe motel in a nice setting with a great neon sign (partly broken at the moment)at reasonable rates. I've had many visitors to the gallery this year who stayed there with no problems. So help support a classic Route 66 business..and if you stay there you can buy me breakfast the next day!

Update: Yay! They fixed the broken neon (again). reward their efforts!

Topock to Needles CA on Jul 08, 2014 at 3:15:04 pm [Print]
During the summer "monsoon" rains in AZ, sometimes Old 66 can be temporarily flooded and closed in the area between Oatman and Topock. IF this happens on your trip (you will see signs)then, coming from Oatman, you'll need to take CO Rd 1 from Golden Shores to Needles (see the maps on AZ page-21 and CA page 2)Or take Boundary Cone Rd. Eastbound you'll need to cross the river at Needles (see map on CA page 4) and make your way to Golden Shores or use Boundary Cone Rd to Oatman.

Or, you can take I-40 (post 1952 66) between Kingman and Topock.

That is, IF the road just happens to be closed. Otherwise just follow the EZ directions between Oatman and Topock.

ST LOUIS yet again! on Jun 29, 2014 at 8:33:22 pm [Print]
Argh! In looking over the changes in the Arch area, I noticed that I made a typo on the exit number for the McKinley bridge on the overview map on MO page 2! (darn this two fingered typing!)

It should be EXIT 248A (not 284A)

My Bad...at least it is shown correctly on the actual directions and detail map on MO page 3 and 4!

ST Louis Arch DETOURS and changes! on Jun 29, 2014 at 7:59:51 pm [Print]
They are doing a major revision of the area of the ARCH. In fact, the pertinent section of Memorial Drive that you once took is now CLOSED.So the directions on MO page 4 to get to the arch no longer work! Argh!!!!!

There will be a new park that will cross over the freeway to connect the Old Courthouse with the Arch, so it can be walked. This will close parts of Memorial Drive. Even the parking garage on Washington St will be removed starting in the fall of 2014, and Washington St will end at Memorial! They also plan to elevate Leonor K Sullivan Blvd a bit, so that will also cause detours.

The maps will need to be changed later, as well, to reflect the new reality (once I can drive the newly revised streets myself).

There will be lane closures, off peak street closures, etc, Expect delays!

Williams AZ on Jun 29, 2014 at 7:39:29 pm [Print]
Jun 16, 2014 at 7:38:43 pm Just got off the phone with the new owner of the Grand Motel in Williams, AZ. This is a cool 1939 era motel with a lot of charm and potential. Rich says they have refurbished the rooms for this season, and will remodel them (with a view towards keeping the classic flavor...and theme rooms) this winter. They even plan to restore their old neon sign. Check them out for yourself. Their phone is 602 741 0923.
