The previous update has reminded me that another gallery visitor sent me brochures from their visit to Rock Art Ranch, which is located south of 66 near Winslow, AZ.
You can get different tours of this working ranch, including a a museum, Indian petroglyphs, etc. Reservations for the tours are required. Check out these websites for more info:

I often get requests for info on cowboy/western themed activities along 66. Here's a report from a recent visitor to the gallery:
(we) visited Los Credos ranch on Paulo Duro Canyon yesterday for a fantastic horse riding ranch experience. The proprietor Phyllis Payne was truly wonderful and inspiring with her knowledge and love of horses and local Indian history. The vistas were simply breath taking. I would heartily recommend this for anyone on route66 due to its close proximity to the route (off I-40 in Amarillo-TX 14 miles down Pullman Rd) and the quality of experience. Phyls is a great personality on route 66. Her website is

South of Joliet (about 2 miles south from I-80) at Laraway Rd is a convenience store called "Route 66 Food and Fuel". Look for the Blues Brothers' Bluesmobile replica perched on a pole on the south side of their lot.
BTW...the fiberglass gas pump replicas are reportedly no longer on the streets in Joliet.

This trip i stayed overnight at the Downtowner, which was excellent. The Lodge on 66 across the street (same owners) also has great rooms. If you're lucky you'll meet the mayor of Williams as he moseys along 66, greeting tourists. Just look for the tall and lean cowboy, who also owns Wild West Jct, which has a great restaurant, bar and fantastic western theme motel rooms!

I stayed at the Safari Motel in Tucumcari on the way back, one of several great motels in that lucky town. Their new "Wanda Jackson" suite is fabulous! Very luxurious and roomy...a great place too stay for a few days of exploring!

Gravel option #1, from Bellemont to Parks, has suffered some from recent rains. On the eastern portion (a short section past private land) the road is very "rubboard" and rough. Go slow, and choose the smoothest track. the remainder is mostly OK. This should be smoothed eventually.

The Univ of MO at Rolla is now the MO Univ of Science and Technology. Campus construction may have blocked the view of the Stonehenge replica (or maybe its been moved). I'll check next trip.

Reader Roger Bartkowicz reminded me that there is a GIANT PEACE SYMBOL along the north side of 66 east of Amarillo (between Exits 87 and 85)in a cool little peace park. So there's a Giant Cross and Giant Peace Sign within about 20 miles!
