EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

bogus signs on Apr 28, 2022 at 6:37:50 pm [Print]
On my recent trip to Chicago and back I noticed many issues with Historic 66 or 66 Byway signs that were misleading, wrong, or had bogus dates. if a brown or blue 66 sign tells you to go a different way from the directions you are following in your EZ 66 Guide, IGNORE THE SIGN!

CHANDLER OK on Apr 22, 2022 at 4:23:05 pm [Print]
If I happen to be away when you come thru Chandler seeking an autograph for your EZ Guide, please go to a new shop...Nostalgic Chandler...at the corner of 12th and Manvel on 66 south side of downtown. Look for the flamingo on the sign. Mariko should have stickers that i autographed which she can put in your book!

Usually open 10-5 except tuesdays and sometimes other days. Nice little gift shop and lots of 66 info.

The giant miner that was added to the photo op on the north east side of town (near the viaduct) has burned in an unfortunate accident. But there are plans to rebuild him.

TWIN ARROWS east of Winona, AZ on Mar 02, 2022 at 2:25:11 pm [Print]
One of the arrows is fallen. The entire complex is heavily damaged and vandalized.ownership of the land and buildings is split between entities, with no cooperation to restore or repair.

Glenrio TX/NM on Feb 21, 2022 at 5:05:26 pm [Print]
The former ghost town of Glenrio is being awakened. New owners plan to rennovate the old Texas Longhorn building and start a gift shop, RV park, diner, etc..,too early to tell exactly what is going on. But the old station/restaurant/motel is now fenced off and their rotten roofs have been removed. A property across the NM state line was also purchased.

One HOPES this place WILL be carefully and lovingly restored with an eye towards preserving its history. This locale has been hit hard by vandals in recent years, so it might not have lasted much longer. But many of us are sure gonna miss the quiet, haunting atmosphere of this former ghost town.

UPDATE: june 30. NO progress or activity reported.

UPDATE; October 20: STILL NO activity or reports.
UPDATE: Spring 2023...it looks like some of the bubble has been cleared. But still no substantial progress at 'restoration."

Since we published edition 4, there have been too many businesses, neon signs and old ruins disappear. Too many for the updates. Just expect that a lot of the places mentioned won't be there. Fortunately many NEW places and restorations have happened.

Substitute Atrisco Vista Blvd for Paseo del Volcan in the directions at EXIT 149 on the wst end of Albuquerque. Did they change the name on me or am I crazy? (update: i have seen more street name changes along 66 recently...sigh...)

The Will Rogers Motel is now the Will Rogers Magnuson Hotel. Reviews look OK. But I can't recommend the Claremore Inn.

Joliet, Illinois IL pg-7 on Nov 21, 2021 at 9:35:29 pm [Print]
Since Chicago street is now open thru downtown south to Washington, I've revised the directions to run along Chicago thru downtown Joliet instead of on the Illinos Hwy 53 One-way couplet.

Also new detailed directions to the Joliet Museum.

JOLIET:IL page-7

WB: From Broadway, cross the Des Plaines River on Ruby, then curve RIGHT onto Chicago St. Follow Chicago south for ¾ mi thru downtown JOLIET. Turn RIGHT onto W Washington St, go one block, then LEFT on S HWY 53 (US 6). At 4th Ave, continue south on Hwy 53 (US 52) under I-80. Go 15.5 mi on HWY 53 (passing ELWOOD en-route) to WILMINGTON.

EB: Follow Hwy 53 north from WILMINGTON for 15.5 mi (passing ELWOOD en route) to cross under I-80 into JOLIET. Follow HWY 53 north about ¾ mi, cross W Washington St, then continue with Chicago ST north thru downtown. After about ¾ mi, turn LEFT on Ruby St. Cross the Des Plains River to the stoplight at Broadway.

MANDATORY SIDE TRIP: The Joliet Museum has a great Route 66 Welcome Center and Gift Shop (312) 978-1282. From Chicago St, go west on W Benton St. Turn LEFT on N Ottowa St/Hwy 53 SOUTH (one-way). The museum is 0.8 mi south (before Cass St), parking at corner of Webster and Hwy 53, just north. ART ALERT! See my ROUTE 66 MURAL inside!
