For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.
Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.
If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

SIDE TRIP: Main Street in Webb City from Broadway down to MacArthur was "Business 66" from around 1951. Noteworthy on this stretch is the Route 66 Theater.

UPDATE SPRING 2018: SOME OF THE GRAVEL HAS BEEN REMOVED.MORE OF THE OLD ROAD CAN BE SEEN. THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE WORKING TO GET FUNDING FOR RESTORATION.
I would think twice about driving either section of the 9 Foot Hwy for a while. recent heavy rains have caused the gravel that covers much of the road to become corrugated (rub board) and makes for a VERY ROUGH and SHAKY drive! Especially on the E 130 Rd section.
This unfortunate coat of rocks covers up much of the old pavement anyway. And they'll probably add more to smooth it out.
If you want to see the best section of road, avoid the section south from Miami (the first few miles are modern pavement anyway). See the map and take current 66/69 down to the JCT of E 140 Rd, where the northernmost 9 Foot Rd marker is. You'll see the original curve here. This east west stretch is in the best condition. You can actually see the concrete curbs and broken asphalt road in between. This can be driven east to the next turn at S 540 Rd, where you can turn around.
I would not drive ANY of this rough road on a motorbike, RV, or sports car. Even the best section is very rough.
The southern section ( E 200 Rd and S 520 Rd) is covered with gravel as well...little of the old road is visible. But you can see a better short curve of old pavement at the southernmost 9 foot Rd Marker just east of Afton (see the map).

Scott Cameron, of Mr C's Route Post east of Lebanon, has passed away. We are losing too many of our good Route 66 people lately. The business is now closed.

Yesterday the historic Rock Creek bridge west of Sapulpa (Ok page-14) was reopened to traffic. RV ALERT! There is a 7 foot 2 inch height limit, enforced on either side by heavy, dangling beams. So if your vehicle is taller than that, do not try to drive the OZARK TRAIL SIDE TRIP. Westbound, you can carefully park east of the bridge on a short stub of old pavement, but do not block the open street. From the east, if you drive your over height vehicle, you will have to carefully back and turn around before reaching the bridge. I'd just visit it on the eastern side.

This is a very sad update. Gary Turner, famed owner of Gary's Gay Parita Sinclair at Pars Springs Jct has passed away. He was a friend to the route and an ambassador to the world. We'll all sure miss him.

My new phone number is: 4oh5 24oh 7659 (just substitute 0 for oh...trying to confuse the phone number collecting web 'bots).
My old 903 cell number will go to voicemail, but I don't check it everyday. And my old 405 number will soon vanish.

Tucumcari has several great Route 66 motels, including the Blue Swallow, Safari and Historic 66 Motels (all of which are in the EZ Guide).
Lately restoration has been underway on yet another, the Roadrunner Lodge Motel
at 1023 Highway 66 Tucumcari, NM 88401
575 282 RT66.
They are gradually adding new rooms and reviews are good. So there's not much reason to stay at a chain motel in Tucumcari!

I've been waiting for some more feedback about the Braidwood Motel in (wait for it) Braidwood, Illinois. Here's what a reader says: "Speaking of motels one of our most surprising visits was to the Braidwood motel in Braidwood Illinois. We could not believe the price was just $39 yet it looked as sparkling as units costing much more per night. The owners were very friendly and accommodating. The room was small yet everything was clean and comfortable. It is across the tracks from Polkadot in drive-in."
So it sounds pretty good to me.

The SIDE TRIP, a "half mile dead end spur on private property" about one mile west of Luther is now blocked by a locked gate.
