EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

The Goldroad Mine Tour is CLOSED. Do not trespass anywhere in this area, as they are working the goldmine again.

There is now a traffic circle on the west side of Rolla, MO instead of the stoplight. WB: Just before reaching EXIT 184, curve thru the roundabout onto MARTIN Springs road. EB: at the west exit interchange, curve thru the roundabout onto Kings Hwy ? BL 44.

They took the overpsass OUT! The one supposed to be at Country Club Dr at the east side of Flagstaff, that is. So, at that intersection, just keep following BL 40/180/Route 66 into town (no need to pass under any underpass now!) EB, just say ahead with Hwy 89.

sheesh!

BTW...forget about 89A in the directions...its now US 180 thru Flagstaff.

sheesh x 2

Do NOT try to access the west end of the bike tour at Monte Carlo Rd EXIT 149. A reader recently ran into an unpleasant individual there. And it appears to be blocked off anyway. Enter and leave by Welch Road EXIT 151 (and use caution). Also. the Bike Trail sign GONE! And a sign on the forest road says that wheeled vehicles are permitted only on roads shown on the "official map"...but there is NO official map! argh. The bike tour sign is still up at Devil Dog Road.

Well, you win some and lose some. With all of the businesses along 66 being restored or redecorated (Boots, Wagon Wheel, the gas stations in Tucumcari) the very town I chose to live in has thrown away one of its few remaining Route 66 relics.

The classic old gas station next door to the funeral home (how fitting) and across the side street from the Phillips 66 (thankfully undergoing restoration) has unceremoniously been demolished. Just what Chandler needs...another vacant lot!

Chandler still has plenty to enjoy...the restored Armory that houses the Rte 66 Interpretive Center (which some people had wanted to demolish), the aforementioned classic Phillips 66, the Lincoln motel, a historic downtown...but the town has lost another bit of history.

You may well wish to skip the Tecolote side trip. I just got a report of a new sign that is posted about the town being part of some federal land grant, and warning off trespassers. This may not apply to the road into town...but use your own judgement!
Some other roads in the area that once gave access to bits of old 66 are now similarly marked.

Oklahoma Bridges on Oct 13, 2011 at 4:34:09 pm [Print]
The Lake Overholser Bridge on the west side of Oklahoma City (OK page 21) is now OPEN!

A 220 foot span of the westbound bridge, formerly one of the "Twin Bridges" east of Catoosa, has been rescued during the demolition, and is on display at Molly's Landing restaurant nearby (OK page-9). Plus, two other spans are in a park on the east side of the river.

I neglected to mention that the Coliseum Ballrom antique mall near Benld has burned. Thanks to Richard and Judy Walker for the reminder!

Boots Motel on Aug 16, 2011 at 7:09:00 pm [Print]
Good news! The famous and all too endangered Boots Motel in Carthage, Mo has been bought. The new owners plan to restore it to its 1940s appearance, and repopen a portion as a motel!

see: http://bootsmotel.homestead.com

Much better than another Walgreens!

update: they have rooms open!!!!!

and I stayed there in the summer of 2012. great!!!!!

a new overpass has been built to carry Elmont Rd/Hwy 185 over I-44, just west of EXIT 225 in SULLIVAN. Here's the revised WB and EB directions for this page (from the new THIRD EDITION):

WB: In STANTON, CROSS I-44 at EXIT 230, then turn RIGHT on the South Outer Rd. Go 5.7 mi (becomes Springfield Rd) into SULLIVAN. Turn LEFT at the 3-Way Stop on N HWY 185, then continue AHEAD with Springfield Rd (no turns) to join the South Outer Rd. Continue past S HWY D and past HWY FF, then thru ST CLOUD.

NOTE: The intersections of N & S Hwy 185 (and HWY D) in SULLIVAN can confuse. NO TURNS except at the 3-WAY STOP.
EB: Follow “Old HWY 66” into BOURBON. At W Pine St (HWY C from EXIT 218), continue AHEAD on “Old Hwy 66”. At HWY J (E Pine St), continue AHEAD on ’66, thru ST CLOUD. Cross the HWY FF JCT. Past the HWY D JCT (2 mi from FF), continue AHEAD with Springfield Rd (no turns) thru SULLIVAN. Turn RIGHT at the 3-Way STOP (AVOID the left onto SOUTH 185) and then continue AHEAD with Springfield Rd (becomes the South Outer Rd) for 5.7 mi to STANTON.
